Soormiyun Cultural and Development Organization proudly lead the celebration of National Women’s Day in Pakistan. This day commemorates the resilience, struggle, strength, and contributions of Pakistani women throughout the history of Pakistan, especially in the face of adversity and gender inequality and discrimination.
On this occasion, Soormiyun Cultural and Development Organization hosted a successful event attended by diverse participants from various backgrounds. The event was held in Islamabad, featured renowned professor and Aurat March organizer, Farzana Bari, whose insights on gender rights inspired and motivated the attendees.
Dr.Farzana Bari highlighted the significance of February 12th which trace back to 1983 when approximately 100 courageous women marched against the repressive and discriminatory Law of Evidence introduced by Dictator General Zia ul Haq in the name of Islamization. Women Action Forum (WAF), along with the Pakistan Women Lawyers, gave a call to march to the Lahore High Court with a petition against the then proposed Law of Evidence and Hudood Ordinance. This legislation devalued a woman’s testimony to half that of a man’s, perpetuating inequality and injustice against women. Protestors despite facing arrests, tear gas, and batons from the police, stood firm, defying laws against public assembly and around 50 protestors were arrested by Lahore Police. She further added that this protest will remain a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s history forever, symbolizing the unwavering determination of women to fight for their rights.
Reflecting on the event, Gulnaz Sheikh, the founder of Soormiyun, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the struggles faced by women leaders of the past. She expressed her gratitude to all participants for their support and commitment to future endeavors aimed at empowering women across Pakistan.
Women are struggling for their equal rights and this event served as a platform for dialogue, solidarity, and reflection, underscoring the need for continued efforts to promote gender equality and women’s rights in Pakistan. Participants of the event expressed their desire for more such programs in the future, recognizing their pivotal role in fostering social change and inclusivity.
This event honored those courageous and resilient women who have shaped our nation’s history and continue to inspire generations to come. Soormiyun Cultural and Development Organization will remain committed to advancing the cause of women’s empowerment and fostering a more equitable society for all genders.
