Mourning processions marking the 9th of Muharram will be held across Pakistan today to pay tribute to the sacrifices of the martyrs of Karbala, with stringent security measures in place nationwide.
Additional personnel from the police, Rangers and other law enforcement agencies have been deployed along procession routes, while surveillance at entry and exit points has been intensified. Authorities are utilizing walk-through gates, CCTV cameras and other modern monitoring systems at sensitive locations.
Special traffic plans have been implemented in several cities, and mobile phone services will remain partially suspended in selected areas as part of security arrangements.
In Islamabad, the main 9th Muharram procession will begin from Imambargah G-6 Ithna Ashari, with roads along the route closed to traffic.
In Lahore, the central procession will start from Pando Street in Islam Pura and proceed through its traditional route, passing Siraj Building, Islam Pura Chowk and Neeli Bagh Chowk before reaching Imambargah Khaima-e-Sadat. Following a mourning gathering and Maghrib prayers, the procession will continue along its designated route before concluding at its starting point.
Karachi’s central procession will emerge from Nishtar Park at 1:00 pm. Earlier, a major mourning congregation will be held at the park, where Allama Shehnshah Hussain Naqvi will address participants. The procession will then travel through its traditional route and conclude at Hussainia Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar.
In Multan, the main mourning procession will be taken out from Imambargah Mumtazabad, with authorities monitoring the route through an extensive CCTV surveillance network.
Peshawar will witness multiple central mourning processions from various imambargahs across the city. Security and administrative arrangements have been finalized, with processions scheduled at different times throughout the day and evening.
In Quetta, the Shabeeh Zuljanah procession will be taken out from Imambargah Nasir-ul-Aza. Mobile phone services have been suspended in the city, while adjoining streets and roads along procession routes have been sealed with containers. Markets and shops located on procession routes have also been ordered to remain closed.
Authorities have urged citizens to cooperate with security personnel, follow traffic advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during procession timings.
