France’s Diane Parry claimed the first WTA singles title of her career after defeating Belgian second seed Elise Mertens in the Monterrey final on Saturday.
The 23-year-old Parry, ranked No. 50 in the world, overcame the world No. 24 Mertens 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 to secure a major milestone in her career.
Parry made a strong start, breaking Mertens twice in the opening set and closing it out 6-4. Mertens, who was seeking her 11th singles title, responded emphatically in the second set, winning it 6-0 to force a deciding set.
Parry regained control in the third set, breaking early to move 2-0 ahead. Her powerful forehand continued to trouble Mertens, and another break gave the French player a 5-1 advantage.
Although Mertens managed to recover one break, Parry held her nerve to close out the set 6-3 and complete her first Tour-level title.
The victory marks the biggest singles achievement of Parry’s career and gives France another WTA champion on the international stage.
