International Labour Day is being observed today (Wednesday) with a renewed commitment to upholding workers’ rights.
The theme of this year’s day is to ‘ensure workplace safety and health amidst climate change’.
Various public and private organizations will host conferences, seminars, marches, and walks to honor the ultimate sacrifices of laborers.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif have expressed government’s resolve to bolster labours’ welfare and safeguard their rights.
In their separate messages on the occasion, President Asif Ali Zardari reiterated government’s commitment to upholding the dignity of labourers and pay tribute to their historic struggle.
He called upon employers to adopt fair wage practices, take steps for worker safety and health and ensure the provision of necessary training and protective equipment to labourers working in hazardous environments.
In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif honored the immense sacrifices of the workers who laid their lives while waging a relentless struggle for their rights.
He said we will soon be convening the inaugural National Tripartite Labour Conference with a special focus on safety and health.
Prime Minister said we will continue our endeavours to improve the working and living conditions of our workers by further promoting their welfare through better housing, education, healthcare and social security benefits.
Chairman Senate Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that the government fully acknowledges the significant role of labours and workers in national progress.
In his message on International Labour Day, he said May 1st is celebrated across the globe, including in Pakistan, as a symbol of the protection of labour rights and the commitment to uphold them.
