Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Amjad Hussain Advocate was elected unopposed as the new Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan on Monday.

The announcement was made during a session of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly chaired by Speaker Imran Nadeem. No other candidate submitted nomination papers for the office of chief minister, while all members present in the house extended their support to Amjad Hussain.

With his election, Amjad Hussain becomes the fifth Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Amjad Hussain was elected to the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly from constituency GBA-1 Gilgit in the recent elections. He also serves as President of the Pakistan Peoples Party Gilgit-Baltistan chapter.

He previously remained a member of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council from 2010 to 2015 and secured victories from two constituencies in the 2020 elections.

The date for the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected chief minister will be announced later.

Earlier, PPP’s Imran Nadeem was elected unopposed as Speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, while Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Kifayat-ur-Rehman Advocate was elected unopposed as Deputy Speaker.

Meanwhile, on the request of opposition members, Speaker Imran Nadeem declared PML-N Gilgit-Baltistan President Hafiz Hafeez-ur-Rehman as the Leader of the Opposition in the assembly.
