In view of the possible flood situation in the River Jhelum during the ongoing monsoon season, Deputy Commissioner Khushab Dr Jahanzeb Hussain Laber visited Johra Kalan in Tehsil Noorpur Thal and the Langarwala Bridge on the Khushab–Girote Road. During the visit, he reviewed the river’s water flow, flood protection arrangements, and the preparedness of the relevant departments.
The visit was attended by the Executive Engineer (Irrigation), Pir Syed Maseeb Raza Shah, Coordinator to the MPA for PP-83 Noorpur, Sardar Sajid Khan Baloch, representatives of the Suthra Punjab Programme, Punjab Police officers and personnel, officials from various departments, local political and social figures, media representatives, and a large number of local residents.
The Executive Engineer (Irrigation) briefed the Deputy Commissioner on the current condition of the River Jhelum, the flow of water, existing flood protection measures, available resources, and contingency plans for any emergency.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jahanzeb Hussain Laber directed all concerned departments to remain on high alert throughout the monsoon season and continuously monitor the River Jhelum and other waterways to ensure a prompt response to any emergency. He emphasised that the protection of the lives and property of citizens remains the top priority of the Government of Punjab, and that all available resources are being utilised to achieve this objective.
The Deputy Commissioner also urged the public to avoid bathing in rivers, canals, and streams, refrain from going near riverbanks unnecessarily, and immediately report any unusual situation to the district administration or the relevant authorities while extending full cooperation to the administration.
During the visit, local political and social leaders, along with residents of Johra Kalan, informed the Deputy Commissioner about road erosion along the bank of the River Jhelum and other local issues. Dr Laber inspected the affected site, directed the relevant authorities to take immediate remedial measures, and assured the local community that their concerns would be addressed promptly and effectively.
