Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities concerned to introduce the latest and sustainable solid waste management system in collaboration with provincial governments across the country, including Islamabad.

He was presiding over a meeting regarding solid waste management in Islamabad today [Tuesday].

The Prime Minister said using environmental-friendly and renewable sources of energy for sustainable development is among the government’s priorities.

He instructed the formation of a task force to propose a comprehensive plan for producing energy from solid waste and it was also decided to prepare a comprehensive roadmap for generating electricity from solid waste.

Shehbaz Sharif said the task force will prepare recommendations in light of modern technology and international experiences.

The Prime Minister directed that proposed task force include experts from private sector and internationally renowned specialists.

He said generating energy from solid waste will further reduce dependence on imported fuel and save valuable foreign exchange.

Shehbaz Sharif further said that a better solid waste management system can also significantly reduce the carbon footprint.

Federal Ministers, including Ahsan Iqbal, Ali Parvez Malik, Owais Ahmed Khan Leghari, Prime Minister’s advisers Rana Sanaullah and Muhammad Ali, and senior officials from relevant departments were also present in the meeting.
