Pakistan pulled off a sensational one-wicket win over England banking on Shadab Khan’s record-breaking century as the hosts overhauled the 241-run target in 47.1 overs after slipping to 154-9 in 33.5 overs here at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday night.
Shadab and Haris put on a match-winning and record-breaking 10th wicket stand of 89 runs taking 80 balls as Pakistan won their third consecutive game in the ODI tri-series. England have now lost all of their three matches and sit on the bottom of the table.
Pakistan bagged just their ninth one-wicket win in ODIs as player of the match Shadab Khan scored 113 off 96 balls with the help of 13 fours and five sixes after walking out to bat at 103-6 in 23.1 overs. It was Shadab’s maiden international century and just second in competitive cricket.
Shadab, on 97, also encountered a heart in the mouth moment after he was adjudged leg-before in the 45th over off Gus Atkinson with Pakistan needing 21 runs to win. With England players shaking hands and the Pakistan last duo walking off, the review confirmed an inside edge on Shadab’s bat bringing life back in the chase.
Haris Rauf contributed seven not out off 19 balls and hit the winning boundary to seal the chase. Shadab was on 32 off 35 balls when Haris joined him on the crease and by then had shared a 19-run stand with Salman Ali Agha, a nine-run stand with Shaheen Shah Afridi and a run-a-ball 23-run partnership with Razaullah.
All of Shadab’s five sixes and nine of his 13 fours came when Pakistan was on the edge with nine wickets down. Earlier, Pakistan were rocked by Atkinson who dismissed Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam, while debutant Henry Crocombe accounted for Saim Ayub.
Saad Baig (32, 22b, 7x4s), Salman Ali Agha (26, 49b, 2x4s) and Hasan Nawaz (15, 33b) got in but departed after getting starts, while Arafat Minhas could only add one run to the total. From 74 for 3, Pakistan lost six for 80 in 22 overs between 11th and 34th overs.
Jamie Overton picked up three for 43, while Liam Dawson returned figures of 10-1-30-2. Atkinson also had two scalps to his name. Crocombe and Will Jacks dismissed one batter each.
England’s innings got the lease from Ben Duckett’s 111-ball 105 with no other batter scoring fifty but they still managed 241 all out in 46.4 overs after losing first three wickets for 19 and were later reeling at 187-8 in 37.3 overs.
Shaheen drew the first blood in the opening over by dismissing Tom Banton to reach the milestone of being the quickest Pakistan pacer to 150 ODI wickets. He also claimed Joe Root’s wicket, while Harry Brook’s outing was restricted to just a seven-ball one courtesy a brilliant throw from debutant Razaullah.
Jordan Cox also departed in the 10th over with 52 runs on the board. Sam Curran (42, 52b, 5x4s) and Duckett then put on 93 runs to take England out of trouble. Arafat Minhas and Razaullah then took two wickets each as England slumped to 201-9 in 40.4 overs.
From this juncture, Atkinson (36 not out, 28b, 3x6s) and Crocombe (8, 14b, 1×4) put on 40 runs for the 10th wicket to give England a fighting total.
