A special discussion was held on Radio Pakistan Sargodha’s popular public and informative programme “Shaheen Sargodha” on the social role of journalism, identification of public issues, protection of graveyards, construction of boundary walls, removal of encroachments, cleanliness, and beautification.
Senior journalists Malik Tariq M.A. Awan and Tanveer Ahmed Qureshi (APP Sargodha Region) participated in the programme. The session was hosted by Subtain Baloch.
During the discussion, the participants highlighted the importance of journalism and the media in identifying public problems and bringing them to the attention of the relevant authorities. Tribute was also paid to journalists associated with print and electronic media and other institutions who are playing a positive role in highlighting public issues and seeking their resolution.
Various complaints and suggestions received from listeners were discussed during the programme. A caller drew attention to the condition of a major graveyard in Sargodha, prompting the senior journalists to discuss in detail the existing condition, administration and management of graveyards as well as civic responsibilities.
Similarly, a complaint received from 153 North highlighted the need for a boundary wall and resolution of various problems at the local graveyard. Attention was also drawn to the need for a boundary wall, removal of encroachments and provision of proper facilities at the graveyard in Shah Maqsood, Tehsil Sahiwal.
The senior journalists proposed that the Government of Punjab and relevant departments should formulate an effective and comprehensive policy for the protection and proper management of graveyards. They suggested that, on the pattern of specialised forces established in various sectors, the authorities should consider establishing a “Graveyard Force” responsible for the security, cleanliness, maintenance and supervision of basic facilities at graveyards.
The participants stressed that graveyards should have proper boundary walls, lighting, cleanliness, plantation and flowers, while their overall environment should be improved through modern landscaping and beautification. This would enable citizens to visit the graves of their loved ones and offer prayers in a dignified and peaceful environment.
They further emphasised the need to digitalise graveyard records and conduct comprehensive surveys and censuses of all graveyards so that their records could be properly maintained. Such measures, they said, could help protect graveyard land, prevent encroachments and improve administration and management.
The discussion also stressed that graveyards are an important part of society and that the protection of graveyards belonging to different religions and communities, along with the provision of basic facilities, should also be incorporated into government policy.
The senior journalists called upon the Government of Punjab, Government of Pakistan and Commissioner Sargodha Division to take immediate steps for the construction and repair of boundary walls, removal of encroachments, cleanliness and provision of basic facilities at graveyards throughout Sargodha Division and the relevant areas. They also called for a proper system for the maintenance of graveyards and consideration of the proposed “Graveyard Force.”
Special discussion was also held on Rabi-ul-Awwal and Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH). The participants said that the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the Last Messenger and Seal of the Prophets, is the best example for humanity. They observed that by incorporating his teachings, sayings, noble character, patience, tolerance, compassion and love for humanity into our practical lives, we can build a better society and make our lives successful and purposeful. The month of Rabi-ul-Awwal provides an opportunity to reflect upon and follow the Seerah and exemplary life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
Listeners also shared their views and suggestions through telephone calls and appreciated the proposals put forward by the senior journalists. They demanded that practical and effective measures be implemented for the protection and proper management of graveyards.
The participants emphasised that the fundamental purpose of media is not merely to identify public problems but also to responsibly convey them to the relevant authorities and play a constructive role in their resolution. In this regard, public-issues programmes broadcast by Radio Pakistan Sargodha were described as particularly significant.
The senior journalists appreciated Radio Pakistan Sargodha for highlighting public issues and organising positive discussions on important matters concerning different segments of society. They said such programmes play an important role in creating public awareness and promoting positive thinking.
