Cyclone relief fund established to support vulnerable people: Sherry

Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman says Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to make landfall at around 10 a.m tomorrow between Keti Bandar in Sindh and parts of Indian state of Gujarat.

Addressing a news conference along with Chairman NDMA Lt. General Inam Haider Malik in Islamabad on Wednesday, she said efforts are afoot to shift people to safer places. She said there are reports that some people are trying to venture to the coastal areas to witness the cyclone and make TikTok videos. She appealed the people to refrain from disaster tourism to keep them safe.

The Minister said Pakistan Army, Rangers and other relief agencies are busy in shifting people from vulnerable areas to safer places. She urged the masses to cooperate with the administration in the evacuation process to save lives and abide by the guidelines and instructions being issued in this regard.

Sherry Rehman said Pakistan Navy and other agencies have shifted their assets to protected areas.

She said Prime Minister’s cyclone relief fund has also been established to support cyclone-hit masses.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman NDMA said so far 73,000 people have been relocated from the vulnerable areas to 75 relief camps. He said provision of clean drinking water, food, and medicines are also being ensured in the camps.
