Spain delivered a commanding performance to defeat France 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final, booking their place in only their second-ever World Cup final and extending their unbeaten run to a record-equalling 37 international matches.

Despite France entering the contest as favourites, boasting attacking stars such as Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise, Spain completely controlled the game with disciplined defending, clinical finishing and an outstanding midfield display.

Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute before Pedro Porro doubled Spain’s advantage in the 58th minute, with Dani Olmo providing the assist. Spain’s defensive unit once again impressed, keeping another clean sheet to maintain one of the tournament’s best defensive records.

The victory continues Spain’s remarkable resurgence under head coach Luis de la Fuente, who has transformed the national team since taking charge in late 2022. After guiding Spain to the UEFA Nations League title in 2023 and the UEFA Euro 2024 crown, De la Fuente has now led La Roja to the FIFA World Cup final.

Spain have quietly built momentum throughout the tournament. Although they were held by World Cup debutants Cape Verde in their opening match, they have steadily improved with every game and have now recorded six clean sheets in seven matches.

Former England striker Chris Sutton praised Spain’s dominant display, saying the European champions “flattened France” and outplayed them in every department. Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane also hailed Spain’s team performance, describing them as “an absolute joy to watch.”

France, meanwhile, struggled to break down Spain’s organised defence and managed only three shots on target throughout the match. Didier Deschamps’ side will now compete in the third-place play-off.

Spain will face either Argentina or England in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, aiming to lift the prestigious trophy for the second time in the nation’s history.
