The PCB’s talks with former Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur for a new stint as head coach or consultant of the men’s team have not worked out. The PCB, via a statement, said that Arthur’s long-term contract with Derbyshire meant he couldn’t take the head coach role right away and conversations over consultancy proved “difficult to materialise for various reasons on both sides.”

Arthur was Pakistan’s head coach from 2016 to 2019. During his tenure, Pakistan won the 2017 Champions Trophy and also reached the No. 1 position on ICC’s T20I rankings. However, he lost the job after Pakistan’s fifth-place finish at the 2019 ODI World Cup.

On December 27, ESPNcricinfo reported that PCB chairman Najam Sethi was in talks with Arthur over returning to his previous job, but the board will now have to look at other candidates.

The PCB said that “some top names are in consideration” as the board continues to search for a head coach with Saqlain Mushtaq set to leave after his contract ends in February.
