Women Media Forum, Pakistan (WMFP) condemns the attack on journalist Yelena Milashina in the strongest terms and stands in solidarity with her.

Such brutal attacks on journalists are a direct attack on freedom of speech and WMFP condemns it and demands that journalists, especially women journalists be allowed to work without intimidation.

Since 2003, Pakistani media has seen a rise in women joining the media who have had to struggle to make their place in the profession. They have been attacked online and offline.

Like their colleagues across the world, women journalists and media workers have pushed back and stood strong. This resilience is seen in women journalists and media workers in other regions as more and more women speak up against threats against them and others.

WMFP’s coordinators – Farzana Ali, Rashida Shoaib, Sheema Siddiqi, Rooba Arooj and Romisa Shah – and members stand in solidarity with Yelena Milashina. Adding that better and stronger international laws be created to protect journalists from threats both online and offline, and countries that countries do more to make sure that perpetrators of attacks against journalists and media workers are not given impunity.
