A senior US diplomat has admitted that there are challenges to the human rights situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K).

Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lu said this while briefing members of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Near East, South Asia, Central Asia, and Counterterrorism during a hearing on India-US relationship.

The US diplomat noted that US believes all Kashmiris deserve the right to live in dignity and enjoy protections and looks forward to continuing to encourage India to fulfill those commitments.
