World Rural Development Day is being observed today (Sunday) for the first time since its official declaration by the United Nations General Assembly in September last year. The resolution, adopted unanimously, designated July 6 as a day to recognize the vital role of rural communities in sustainable development and to promote their well-being globally.
The resolution encourages all UN member states, international and regional organizations, NGOs, and other stakeholders to commemorate the day through initiatives that align with their national and regional priorities.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to the welfare and development of rural populations across Pakistan. In a special message, the Prime Minister emphasized that rural communities are not only the backbone of the national economy but also custodians of Pakistan’s centuries-old traditions of resilience, cooperation, and cultural heritage.
He said Pakistan joins the international community in marking this important day to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of its rural population and to recommit to policies that promote inclusive development.
“Pakistan’s villages nourish our people and uphold our values,” he noted. “Our government prioritizes inclusive rural development as a central pillar of national progress.”
The Prime Minister reiterated that the government views rural citizens as equal partners in building a stronger, more equitable, and prosperous Pakistan.
