Senate passes resolution condemning hostile cross-border actions from Afghanistan

The Senate today unanimously passed a resolution, unequivocally condemning the unprovoked aggression and hostile cross-border actions emanating from the territory of Afghanistan.

The resolution moved by PPP leader Sherry Rehman described them as blatant violations of international law, established diplomatic norms and the principles of peaceful neighbourly relations.

The resolution emphatically declared that any attempt to challenge the sovereignty, territorial integrity, or national security of Pakistan constitutes a direct affront to the dignity of the Pakistani nation and shall be met with a firm, proportionate and decisive response.

The House paid tribute to the bravery, professionalism and sacrifice of Pakistan’s armed forces and law enforcement personnel who stand vigilant in defence of every inch of the homeland.

The House recalled with profound regret that for over 40 years, Pakistan has borne extraordinary social, economic, and security burdens in hosting millions of Afghan nationals, extending humanitarian assistance, facilitating peace efforts and consistently advocating for Afghanistan’s stability in international forums, often at immense cost to its own national development and internal security.

The resolution expressed deep disappointment that instead of reciprocal goodwill, Pakistan continues to face hostile rhetoric, cross-border violations and the persistent presence of anti-Pakistan terrorist elements operating from Afghan soil, reflecting a troubling pattern of ingratitude and disregard for bilateral understandings.

The House demanded that the Afghan Taliban regime immediately cease all hostile actions, prevent the use of Afghan soil for terrorism or aggression against Pakistan and honour their international obligations and commitments to peaceful coexistence.

The resolution affirmed that while Pakistan remains committed to constructive engagement, regional peace and mutually respectful relations, its patience must not be misconstrued as weakness, nor its desire for stability mistaken for inability to respond decisively.

The House also called upon the international community to take serious note of these developments and urge the Afghan Taliban regime to adhere to international norms and prevent further destabilisation of the region.

The House expressed the resolve that they stand united beyond all political divides in defence of Pakistan’s sovereignty and support all necessary measures undertaken by the state to safeguard its territorial integrity and national honour.

Taking the floor, Advisor on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah Khan said the unanimous passage of the resolution by the Senate sends a clear message that the entire nation stands shoulder to shoulder with their armed forces. He said the nation has complete trust and confidence in the armed forces.

Alluding to the professionalism of armed forces, he said they gave a befitting and effective response to the Afghan aggression.

As regards the political issues, the Advisor emphasized that these should be resolved on the table of negotiations and mentioned the repeated offers made by the government to the opposition in this regard. He regretted that the other side did not respond to our offers.

Meanwhile, the Senate was informed that National Accountability Bureau has recovered an amount of eleven point five six five (11.565) trillion rupees in various cases over the last five years.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar told the House during the Question Hour that NAB is an independent institution. He said major reforms were introduced in the NAB in June 2023, emphasizing that these have helped improve its performance.

Taking the floor, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhary informed the House that new gas discoveries have been made in the country, which will significantly help in meeting domestic gas requirements.

He said gas production has improved, leading to the lifting of the ban on new gas connections.

Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari told the House that the losses of distribution companies have been reduced from 586 billion rupees to 397 billion rupees in one year. He said the latest technology is being introduced to improve the efficiency of power sector.

Awais Leghari said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a power project for Gwadar. He mentioned that the reliable electricity from this project will be available to Gwadar in February or March next year.

He said twenty-eight thousand tube wells have been solarized in Balochistan with an investment of fifty-five billion rupees, emphasizing that this is greatly benefiting the local farmers.

It was introduced by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar.
