Minister for Climate Change, Sherry Rehman has asked the people living near coastal belt of Sindh and Balochistan to seriously follow precautionary measures mentioned in advisories issued by National Disaster Management Authority to meet any untoward situation due to Cyclone Biparjoy.
Addressing a news conference in Islamabad along with Chairman NDMA, Lt. Gen. Inam Haider Malik, she said 12 feet high tides with a speed of 200 kilometers per hour can hit the coastal belt of the country.
Sherry Rehman said fisherman have been warned to avoid going intoto sea side. She further said the old and mud houses can be damaged due to cyclone.
She said intensity of the cyclone is increasing and moving speedily to the coastal belt of Sindh. She warned that low lying areas of Karachi can be inundated due to rains and speedy winds of cyclone.
She advised people to voluntarily move at safer places and cooperate with the evacuation teams and concerned staff, whose leaves have also been cancelled.
On the occasion, Chairman NDMA, Lt. Gen. Inam Haider Malik said Cyclone Biparjoy can hit the Keti Bander on Thursday.
He said the evacuation process at coastal belt of Thatta, Keti and Jaati Bander and Umerkot is underway, while more than one hundred thousand people will be evacuated till tomorrow.
He said all arrangements have been completed for rescue and relief operation.
The Chairman NDMA said Pakistan Army, Pakistan Rangers, PDMA and NGO’S are ready to meet any untoward situation.
