At least 17 tourists were swept away by a flash flood in the Swat River near Khwazakhela on Thursday. According to Rescue 1122, search operations are ongoing, with nine bodies recovered so far from different parts of Swat, while four individuals have been rescued alive.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow and grief over the incident. In a statement, he prayed for the deceased and extended condolences to the bereaved families. He also directed authorities to expedite efforts to locate the missing and enhance safety measures near rivers and streams.

The Prime Minister lauded the efforts of the NDMA, local administration, and rescue teams in saving stranded tourists and instructed them to strengthen preventive measures to avoid such tragedies in the future.

Meanwhile, in response to alleged negligence, several officials have been suspended. According to a spokesperson for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister, an inquiry committee has been formed under the Chairman of the CM Inspection Team to investigate the incident and determine accountability.

Among those suspended are the Assistant Commissioner of Babuzai and Khwazakhela, for failing to issue timely warnings and make advance preparations. The district in-charge of Rescue 1122 has also been suspended.

The spokesperson further stated that the families of the deceased will receive financial assistance of Rs. 1 million each.
