Pakistan joined the international community today in observing the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, reaffirming its commitment to combatting human trafficking through stronger legislation, cross-border cooperation, and enhanced public awareness.

The United Nations marks this day annually to raise global awareness about the plight of trafficking victims and to promote the protection of their rights. This year’s theme emphasizes the crucial role of law enforcement and the criminal justice system in dismantling organized trafficking networks while ensuring a victim-centred approach.

President Asif Ali Zardari, in his message on the occasion, stressed the need for international cooperation, public awareness, and collective global efforts to eliminate human trafficking. He noted that Pakistan has implemented strict legal frameworks and adopted modern tools to address the issue. “Our relevant agencies are making vigorous efforts to dismantle human smuggling networks and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the President said, adding that Pakistan remains committed to working with global partners to create a world free of human exploitation.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif also reiterated Pakistan’s determination to play an active role in combating trafficking. Highlighting the tragic incidents involving illegal migration and the drowning of vessels carrying Pakistani migrants, he called for urgent and coordinated measures to prevent such tragedies. The Prime Minister announced the formation of a special federal task force to tackle human trafficking and its associated risks.

He further emphasized Pakistan’s active participation in multilateral forums such as the Budapest Process, the Bali Process, and the Silk Road initiative to strengthen collaborative strategies aimed at protecting vulnerable populations and curbing trafficking networks.

The observance of the day serves as a reminder of the ongoing global fight against one of the most heinous forms of exploitation, and Pakistan’s continued efforts to contribute meaningfully to that cause.
