Jora Kalan, a village with an estimated population of 25,000 in the Kadhi area, has come under serious threat from the rapidly advancing erosion of the Jhelum River. The riverbank is steadily moving toward the residential area, raising fears of significant damage to homes, agricultural land, and public infrastructure if immediate preventive measures are not taken.
According to local residents, erosion along the Jhelum River has continued for several years. However, its intensity has increased considerably in recent days, creating widespread concern among the local population. Residents warned that failure to take prompt action could result in large-scale loss of life and property.
Meanwhile, Member of the Provincial Assembly Sardar Zafar Abbas Khan Baloch visited the erosion-hit site near Jora Kalan on an emergency basis. He inspected the affected area, reviewed the situation in detail, and met with local residents. Speaking on the occasion, he assured them that he would immediately take up the matter with the relevant authorities and play every possible role in ensuring permanent protective measures to safeguard the village.
Meanwhile, representatives of public, social, and welfare organizations have strongly urged the Secretary of the Punjab Irrigation Department, the Deputy Commissioner of Khushab, and the Assistant Commissioner of Noorpur Thal to visit Jora Kalan without delay, assess the ground situation, and formulate a comprehensive and permanent solution. They also demanded the immediate construction of the previously approved 200-foot protective embankment to prevent further erosion of the Jhelum River and protect thousands of residents from potential danger.
The local community emphasized that the issue should be treated as an emergency to avert a possible humanitarian and economic disaster in the future.
