The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund has urged international community to support the flood victims in Pakistan.
Speaking at a press briefing in Geneva, the UNICEF Representative in Pakistan, Abdullah Fadil especially emphasized on investing in building human capital and resiliency, particularly in rural Sindh and Balochistan where much of the devastation was caused by the floods.
He said the vulnerable communities in these areas need reliable access to essential services such as healthcare, nutrition, education, protection, hygiene, and sanitation.
The UNICEF Representative said four million children in the flood hit areas still fight for survival near contaminated and stagnant flood waters.
He said with homes destroyed, they are suffering a bitter winter without a decent shelter.
He said real economic recovery and sustained growth can only be achieved if necessary investments are being made to meet the immediate and longer-term needs of children in the flood affected areas.
