At the United Nations, Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to reduce disaster risk, build climate resilience and cater to the urgent needs of flood-affected people.
The resolve was made by Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority Lt. General Inam Haider Malik while addressing the UN General Assembly’s two-day high-level meeting in New York.
Highlighting Pakistan’s assistance to earthquake-hit people of Turkiye and Syria, he said climate threats are global and need global response.
He said Pakistan is facing daunting challenge of amassing a colossal executive plan for recovery and reconstruction, after the last year’s devastating floods that impacted 30 million people, costing 1740 lives and over 30 billion dollars loss and damage assessments. He noted that despite huge financial challenges, Pakistan has demonstrated outstanding resolve and showcased its commitment for people needs.
The Chairman pledged that Pakistan stands fully committed to replicate the successful templates and meet the Sendai Framework expectation thresholds.
He said climate threats are global and thus they warrant global objectives and global success.
He said Pakistan proposes dedicated Global DRR Fund under UNDRR to finance the global and regional initiatives, separate from climate focused financing windows.
